In a recent interview, Kelsea Ballerini revealed new information about the breakup that inspired her newest songs. While talking with some of her fans, Ballerini dropped a bombshell about a heart-wrenching voicemail on “Blindsided.”
Setting The Stage
At the beginning of 2023, Kelsea Ballerini released a new EP titled “Rolling Up The Welcome Mat.”
It doesn’t take much detective work to realize the album is about her divorce last year from fellow musician Morgan Evans. The songs are top-notch and give listeners a strong understanding of the struggles Ballerini faced in her previous marriage.
On the second to last song, “Blindsided,” the music abruptly fades away. Listeners hear a voicemail from a woman, presumably Ballerini, pleading with her partner. The woman says, “It’s not [explitive] news to you, babe. You’ve been in this relationship, it’s not news to you.”
The voicemail works in concert with the song’s lyrics, which tell of how Ballerini was upfront about the relationship’s issues, but her concerns were routinely ignored.
So What Happened?
On July 19th, Kelsea Ballerini announced via Instagram that she would be holding 3 exclusive screenings of her short film, “Under The Welcome Mat.” These screenings would also include a conversation with her.
During one of these conversations, an audience member asked the singer about the voicemail.
In a video posted by Entertainment Weekly, Ballerini explains that this was a “no-fly” question in all of the interviews she had done following the EP’s release. Presumably, interviewers were warned ahead of time not to ask about the voicemail. The crowd breaks into surprised chatter, antsy for further details.
The star mulls over what she wants to share before revealing a key piece of information.
“It’s real, that’s all I’ll tell you.”
No wonder the voicemail feels like such a gut punch! The singer’s protectiveness of her privacy is both admirable and understandable. That said, fans are surely thankful to her for sharing this detail because of the gravity it adds while listening to the song.

Rolling Up The Welcome Mat
All of this comes mere days after Ballerini announced a re-release of the EP. “Rolling Up The Welcome Mat (For Good).” will include a bonus track as well as alternate versions of other songs.
Fans won’t have to wait long, as the new version will be released on August 11th, 2023.
A Brighter Future
Despite the difficulties she has gone through, Ballerini is looking forward.
On Instagram, the singer asked listeners for one favor. Ballerini asked that fans “Not dig back into the experience that [the EP] was written about nearly a year ago.”
She further explained that she wants us to “Continue growing, healing, and evolving together with acceptance and kindness.”
It seems she would rather focus on moving forward instead of dwelling on the past. So while fans can be thankful to her for opening up about her struggles, they can also be comforted that her present life is much happier.
