Country star Lainey Wilson is a successful artist from Baskin, Louisiana. Even so, many listeners doubt Wilson’s authenticity. Recently, she clapped back at her detractors in a big way. So, what did the Louisiana native have to say to those who doubt her?
Lainey Wilson Paid Her Dues To Get To Where She Is Now
When you make it to the top, as Lainey Wilson has, it’s easy for people to assume that someone like her found success overnight, or that someone handed it to her. However, when it comes to Lainey Wilson and how she made it to where she is now, there was nothing easy or cushy about her climb.
Lainey Wilson moved to Nashville in 2011 to make it in the industry and make a name for herself. Much like the many people who move to Nashville with big dreams of stardom, Lainey Wilson took the risk. Paying her dues, Wilson lived outside of a recording studio in a camper before eventually signing to a major label in 2018.
Wilson Found Success On Her Terms
Living out of a camper until getting signed to a major label meant that Wilson had a lot of uncertainty while trying to chase her dreams. Wilson focused on the craft of songwriting, including telling authentic stories. Eventually, with enough dedication and perseverance, she got noticed.
Lainey Wilson released her debut album, Tougher, in 2016. Since then, she has continued to use the formula that got her to where she is, with a little bit of grit, attitude, and a catalog of killer songs. Still, even with everything Wilson has going for her, there are some country fans who doubt her authenticity.

Wilson Responds To Haters, Defends Her Louisiana Roots
With everything Wilson has accomplished since she decided to roll the dice and move to Nashville in 2011, she has indeed earned her spot, as well as all of the accolades she has received since then. However, not everyone is on board the Lainey Wilson train.
In fact, many have criticized Wilson. She said recently that most people hear her accent and think: “There’s no way that this girl could be that country”.
When you’re in the public eye like she is, a certain level of thick skin is necessary. That said, when it comes to people questioning her accent or her authenticity as a whole, she is “ready to fight somebody”.
Growing up in a Louisiana town with less than 200 people, Wilson admits that “you can’t help but to be country”. Lainey Wilson, speaking to Glamour, went on to say: “I take being country as a huge compliment because it’s the truth”.
