Dolly Parton married Carl Dean in 1966 against her family’s wishes. She was just 20 years old at the time, and her career was just getting started. A shocking 58 years later, the couple are still married, and happily!
While Dolly Parton has become a legend in country music and beyond, her husband has mostly stayed off the public radar. He rarely attends any events with her. However, she gets along just fine without a plus one.
The “9 to 5” singer cited her husband as a reason why she retired from touring a few years ago. She wanted to stay home with her husband. Her unique upcoming interactive tour gives her the opportunity to do just that.
Country Singer Jokes Husband Has Seen Her ‘Every Which Way’
Dolly Parton sat down with E News! for a new interview last week. The interview aired around the same time the country star celebrated her 58th anniversary, so the topic of her marriage came up frequently.
Interviewers Keltie Knight and Justin Sylvester asked if Carl Dean had ever seen Dolly Parton without her famous wigs and heavy makeup. After all, she confessed years ago to sleeping in full makeup. In response, she joked that her husband of over five decades has seen her “every which way.”
“In fact, I remember when we first got married I had just got out of the shower and I didn’t have my shoes on, he said, ‘Well you ain’t big as a bar of soap.’ He said something like that… it was an ‘s’ word.”
How They Keep Marriage Fresh
Dolly is known for her playful sense of humor and flirty personality. She keeps the spark alive by dressing up for Carl and surprising him. A couple of years ago, she recreated her 1978 Playboy magazine cover for her husband’s 79th birthday.

But keeping her marriage spicy isn’t the only reason for its longevity. She spilled to E! that after nearly 60 years together, they still “enjoy each other.” But instead of date nights, they have day dates and it is the cutest thing you’ll read today.
“We have our little RV and we like to travel around. Going down and get some food or I’ll make a picnic and we go down to the river and have a picnic and just kind of ride around and do our little things.”
