Luke Combs’ Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old Tour kicked off in April and wraps up next month. He released his fifth studio album, Fathers & Sons earlier this year.

Despite his mainstream success, Luke Combs was once an up-and-coming singer/songwriter trying to make it in Nashville. Lainey Wilson recently recalled writing songs with Luke Combs in her camper a decade ago.

37-year-old country singer Cody Johnson is just finding his footing in the music industry. He just had his third No. one song with “Dirt Cheap” from his 2023 album Leather. But the hit song was originally offered to Luke Combs.

According to American Songwriter, the “When It Rains It Pours” singer turned it down, so it was offered to Cody Johnson instead. The outlet revealed that Luke Combs doesn’t really regret letting another singer have what would have been his 17th number one song.

“I talked about it afterwards, he had some choice words to say about ‘Dirt Cheap. I said, ‘Everything happens for a reason,'” Cody Johnson recounted.

Cody Johnson Explains Why He Relates To “Dirt Cheap”

“Dirt Cheap” was written by Josh Phillips. It is about a cotton farmer who refuses to sell his land to a railroad company. The farmer is promised a lot of money if he sells, but no amount of money would be enough.

Cody Johnson lives on a huge ranch in Texas with his wife and two daughters. He can related to wanting to pass land down to his family.

“I am that old man in that song. The ranch mentality is very different. I’ve already got the oak tree picked out where I’m going to be buried. I want my grandkids to own this land.”
