Country sensation Jelly Roll has performed many covers of Toby Keith’s songs since the legend sadly passed away in February 2024. One of those hits that keeps getting attention from Jelly Roll is “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” which he performed on New Year’s Eve again. He spoke recently about how Toby gets all the credit for convincing him to go from rap music to being a country performer. What exactly did he share? Keep reading to find out more.
Jelly Roll Credits Toby Keith For Music Transition
In a literal sense, Toby Keith changed Jelly Roll’s life. After his incredible performance in Nashville on New Year’s Eve, it was once again brought up how much Toby is admired even after his death. He tragically passed away from cancer in early 2024. People shared more about how much Jelly Roll looks up to Toby Keith.
During the five-song set he performed to ring in 2025, he ended the show with “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.” In a previous interview, he talked about how songs such as “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” “The Next Thing on My List” and “I Love This Bar” all changed his outlook on music. He went from cranking out rap music to being a country singing sensation.
At one point Jelly Roll said,
“He was an outlier. He was unapologetically Oklahoma. There are a lot of things he did that encouraged me and empowered me. He was very individualistic and carved his own path and he did it his own way, from pillar to post. He never knew it, but he was a mentor to me, just watching him from afar.”
He Had Toby Keith’s Son’s Blessing
The inspirational performer also shared that before he released “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” on Amazon Music Toby’s son offered his blessing. In fact, his son paid him a great compliment. He said it was one of the best performances of the hit song he’d ever heard.
Proceeds made from this cover all went to the Toby Keith Foundation.
Jelly Roll continues to entertain and inspire everyone around him. He is a perfect example of someone who has turned their life around. He made his dreams come true.
Entertainers all over the country continue to honor Toby Keith’s memory. The Oklahoma Sooners even honored him at every home game throughout their 2024 season. Fans all over the world love him. Toby will continue to touch lives even long after he’s gone.
