As the conversation at the seminar continued, Eric Church asked his co-host about his childhood. Jelly Roll said that his home was very turbulent due to his parents both struggling with addiction.

The rapper-turned-country-star said he was 13 before he realized that Vodka wasn’t usually added to coffee. Until then, he thought it was a sweetener like Sweet’N Low.

“I’ll never forget that conversation, when I showed up to elementary school drunk. Yes, I am as white trash as I appear,” – Jelly Roll, Country Radio Seminar.

But his childhood wasn’t all bad.

Tells Story About How His Mom Influenced His Musical Tastes

Jelly Roll spent a large part of his youth in and out of legal trouble. He spent nearly a decade in prison before becoming a huge country music star. He shared a surprising story with Eric Church about his mother when she wasn’t in the depth of her addiction.

According to Jelly Roll, his mom is why he has such a range of music tastes. He told a story of how his mother was the best at picking playlists. However, he noted that in the early 1990s, they weren’t called playlists.

He told Eric Church and the audience how his mother chose the best records to play. Jelly Roll added that people in the neighborhood came over to his family’s home to listen to the records his mother played.

The popular singers had a laugh over how different things were in the early 90s when it came to music interests. He remembered how kids weren’t allowed to express their like for different genres of music. For example, he said you couldn’t show up to school in a Metallica shirt one day and another band’s shirt the next.
