Country Rock Music Legend Charlie Daniels Passes Away at 83-Years-Old

The country music world is mourning the recent death of Southern Country-Rock music legend Charlie Daniels. The much-loved musician passed away early Monday morning in the Summit Medical Center located in Hermitage, Tennessee. He was 83 years old.

Charlie Daniels’ Amazing Career

While many country music fans will best remember Daniels for his massive 1979 hit, “Devil Went Down to Georgia”, the 83-year-old musician had an amazing career that spanned several decades.

The artist was born in October 1936, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Charlie Daniels started his career in his teens as the singer of  the group ‘Misty Mountain Boys.’  Daniels broke into the industry during the 1960s by co-writing hit songs for artists such as Elvis Presley, and serving as a stage musician for acts like Leonard Cohen and the renowned Bob Dylan and finally relocated to the Nashville area in 1967.

Daniels released a number of hit albums over the length of his career. His numerous accreditations include five Grammy nominations and one win back in 1979 for “Devil Went Down to Georgia.”  Daniels’  repertoire of country hits earned his ticket into the esteemed Country Music Hall of fame. Officially inducted in 2008, the esteemed country rocker is also a member of the prestigious Grand Ole Opry.

Bridging the Gap – A man of many Genres

While Daniels’ home was deep in the roots of country music,  he often found his music earned him notoriety in other genres.  According to NPR, Daniels was considered an ‘important link ‘between country music and artists outside the Southern-Rock spheres.’ Over the course of his career, he worked with artists of nearly every genre, including traditional bluegrass and more ‘modern’ artists of the time like Bob Dylan and George Harrison. He even made a small appearance in the iconic American film classic ‘Urban Cowboy’ with his band back in 1980.

Passing the Torch

Daniels also had a hand in discovering a number of other Country successful artists.  During his time with ‘The Charlie Daniels Band,’ Daniels began a  yearly tradition of hosting the ‘Volunteer Jam’ festival. This yearly event led to the rise of artists such as Lynard Skynard, Emmylou Harris, Stevie Vaughn, and James Brown. All of whom went on to have huge careers of their own.

A Tragic Ending

A recent post from TMZ reports that Charlie Daniels’ death was confirmed to the public on Monday by the artist’s longtime publicist, Don Murray Grubbs. The 83-year-old musician passed from a hemorrhagic stroke. In death, Charlie leaves behind beloved wife, Hazel, son Charlie Daniels Jr.
