Luke Combs got a surprise hit when he sang “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman. The popularity of this song shocked everyone, including Tracy Chapman. Now, “Fast Car” has been nominated for a Grammy. Fans of both Combs and Chapman will be pleased to know they will be singing it, as a duet, at the Grammys award ceremony on February 4th.

The Origins Of Luke Combs’ “Fast Car”

“Fast Car” was originally written and recorded by Tracy Chapman. It was released way back in 1988. Released not as a country song, but, instead as a folk/pop song.

Like today, “Fast Car” did get some recognition. It was nominated for three Grammy awards. The awards were for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Performance. Chapman only won one Grammy in 1989 and that was for Best Female Pop Performance.

Follow The Money

Tracy Chapman earned about $500,000 in royalties for “Fast Car” in just the first few months of Luke Combs releasing it as a single. It has been estimated those royalties could be worth about $1 million now.

That is a nice chunk of change for the almost-retired Tracy Chapman. The “Talkin’ Bout A Revolution” singer has not released any new music since 2008. Chapman almost never tours and rarely issues statements through her representatives. Despite this, the Luke Combs rendition of “Fast Car” has breathed new life into Chapman’s musical career.

At The Grammys

Tracy Chapman was the closing act of the 1989 Grammys. She performed “Fast Car” then. At the time of publication, it was unknown where she and Luke Combs would fall in the lineup of performers on February 4th at this year’s Grammys. It is known they will be singing the song which had previously won a coveted Grammy.

The Chances Of “Fast Car” Winning A Grammy

It is unknown how much of a chance Luke Combs’ rendition of “Fast Car” has of winning a Grammy. Based on its past wins, the odds might be better than some might think. It already won a Grammy in 1989.

“Fast Car” has also won awards as a country music song. In 2023, it won the Single of the Year at the CMAs. It also took home a CMA for Song of the Year.
