Jelly Roll recently opened up about his fears for when his kids start experimenting with prescription drugs.
He’s Got A History
Jelly Roll isn’t the poster child for “clean and sober”, at least not what you would see in suburban white America. He is clean and sober after a long history of experimenting with drugs and being in and out of jail because of them. Jelly Roll even used drugs as a way to promote himself in his career. He would hand out mixtapes as he sold the devil’s lettuce (and other things).
Starting at the tender age of 14 he tried cocaine, weed, opioids, and alcohol (except beer). He has said in numerous interviews how addiction has affected him. He had a felony on record that couldn’t be expunged due to the laws in Tennessee, and that kind of record really affects what kind of work you can do and even where you can live, not to mention the toll drug addiction has on a person’s friends and family. Jelly was able to clean up once his daughter, 15-year-old Bailee Ann, was born, and he’s been fighting the good clean fight ever since.
Speaking For Good
Some people take their history and forget it, just push it aside and forget it. Some maybe hide it and pretend it didn’t happen. Not Jelly Roll. He embraces his past and uses it for good, to teach others the dangers of what addiction can do. Dad to Bailee Ann, 15, and Noah, 7, Jelly Roll has found that the world isn’t the same as it was. Instead of kids experimenting with different drugs and substances and being done (or addicted, yikes), they also have the potential of dying after one try.
According to the CDC, Fentanyl overdoses kill over 150 people every single day. Fentanyl is also 50 times stronger than heroin, and 100 times stronger than morphine! And apparently for every 10 pills laced with fentanyl, 7 contain a lethal amount. It is not something to mess around with and Jelly Roll has even spoken to Congress about this, wanting to help bring attention to this crisis and help get a solution going.

Kids Are Gonna Be Kids
Jelly Roll opened up to People Magazine recently, saying how he knows his kids are going to experiment someday with drugs, but he’s scared. “My daughter will never experience the safety of experimenting with drugs,” Jelly says. “I know that sounds crazy to say, but when I was a kid, my mother would be like, ‘You’re going to try everything once. Just be safe.’” “It’s not safe for any kid to be doing anything,” he tells People. He was speaking specifically about drugs now being potentially laced with fentanyl. At least he knows and is being proactive in his family and in the country, using his platform to advocate. Way to go, Jelly.
