Eric Church has been in the music industry a long time, and he has made some savvy business decisions along the way. However, he recently opened up about one move he made that completely ticked off his record label. So, what did he do, and what did he have to say about it?

Eric Church Has Been A Country Music Star A Long Time

Eric Church is one of those seasoned veterans of the music industry that has been around a long time. Because of this, he has navigated all of the pitfalls that artists face along their journey, and he has survived the cutthroat industry long enough to still be putting out killer tunes.

There are certainly a lot of landmines to navigate as a country artist, especially when it comes to the business side of things, and working your way around the Nashville machine. Church is one of only a handful of artists who have made their careers into a long and successful one, but, you don’t get to be where Church is without making some mistakes along the way.

Church Surprised His Fans Back In 2015

Back in 2015, Eric Church surprised his fans with an album, Mr. Misunderstood. The album showed up as a physical CD in the mailboxes of fans, and this was completely unexpected. While this was a good surprise, it was something that threw his record label for a loop.

What was even more surprising about this was that Eric Church did this without announcing it or anything. So, it was a surprise to both his label and his fans when this album dropped. No one knew that he was going to release an album, let alone that it would show up in their mailboxes as a physical CD.

Eric Church Talks Completely Pissing Off His Record Label

Church eventually held a press conference to announce the record. However, even at that time, his label was completely in the dark about the record coming out.

Eric Church opened up about this situation in a recent conversation with Jelly Roll, saying: “We kept this top secret. We went so far as to, we bought a record plant in Germany to make our vinyl records and CDs, so that the US, the normal distribution didn’t know.”

Church continued, adding: “What always happens…is the record goes…we always give the record to radio, you give it to media, and then that opinion of that, and then it goes to the fans. And I always thought that was backwards. It should go to the fans, and then radio, and then critics.”

Eric Church certainly went rogue and went against the established way of doing things when he released this surprise record, and the fact that, all these years later, people like Jelly Roll are still bringing it up means Church certainly did something right.
