Who says country singers don’t know how to rock? During her recent concerts with Guns N’ Roses, Carrie Underwood has been blowing the crowd away with a surprising cover.
An Unexpected Pairing
Rock and country fans alike were surprised when Carrie Underwood announced that she would be joining Guns N’ Roses for several stops on their massive 2023 tour.
On May 31st, the country star tweeted the following:
@carrieunderwood
SO ready for this! I’m joining @gunsnroses
for select dates on their North American Tour in August and I CANNOT WAIT!!
While this may seem like a strange move at first blush, it’s a brilliant partnership. Underwood has opened up on several occasions about her love for rock music.
Growing up, she was a huge fan of grunge and her first concert was Green Day. And the lyrics to her breakout hit “Before He Cheats” are chock full of punk rock power. It was only a matter of time before the country singer set her sights on rock stardom as well.
Stage Jitters
After 19 years of performing on massive stages, pre-show nerves are still a thing for the star. After her first show with Guns N Roses, Underwood revealed that she had been “super nervous” about the concert.
But the positive reception she got from the rock audience seems to have calmed her fears.
There’s plenty of overlap between rock and country fans, and Carrie Underwood is a household name. There’s no doubt that Guns N’ Roses fans were rocking out to Underwood’s original music throughout her set. But it certainly helps that she had something extra in store for them.
An Ace Up Her Sleeve
It looks like the “Cowboy Casanova” singer took this opportunity to live out her rockstar dreams. During her set opening for Guns N’ Roses, Underwood broke into a cover of Motörhead’s “Ace of Spades.”
Throughout the cover, Underwood proves that she has what it takes to rock out with the best of them. She makes the song her own, hyping up the crowd during an acapella breakdown during the song’s bridge.
Fans of Motörhead’s Lemmy will certainly appreciate the signature growl that Carrie Underwood adds to her vocal tone throughout the song.
Rock and Roll Lifestyle
Carrie isn’t done rocking out yet. She’ll be joining Guns N’ Roses for one more concert on August 26th in Nashville, TN.
With any luck, we’ll get some more footage of the country star entertaining crowds with spirited heavy metal covers.
And who knows? Maybe this is the beginning of more rock and roll collaborations. Whether through recordings or more crossover tours, it would be thrilling to see Carrie Underwood continue to show off her rock and roll bona fides.
