Shania Twain knows what it is like to have a serious medical condition that threatens to derail her career. Celine Dion recently canceled her world tour due to a disease of her own. Knowing what she is going through, Shania has offered to reach out to Celine and help her as a support system.
Here is what happened to Celine and how Shania responded.
What is wrong with Celine Dion?
In December 2022, Celine Dion announced that she had a condition known as Moersch-Woltman syndrome, which is also called stiff-person syndrome. This is characterized by progressive muscle stiffness (rigidity) and repeated episodes of painful muscle spasms. Sudden noises, emotional distress, and physical contact can trigger painful spasms.
This makes it hard for someone whose job is to perform music for a large crowd, as the music, performance, and movements on the stage all contribute to the pain and discomfort. There is also no cure for Moersch-Woltman syndrome, but symptoms can be managed with medications.
When Celine canceled her tour, she announced on Instagram that “It’s not fair to you to keep postponing the shows, and even though it breaks my heart, it’s best that we cancel everything now until I’m really ready to be back on stage again.” She finished by saying that she was not giving up and would be back soon.
Shania Twain wants to reach out to Celine Dion
Shania Twain wants to reach out to Celine Dion and offer her support and someone to talk to. This is because Shania knows what it is like to have a career halted due to an illness. While it was nothing like what Celine is going through, Shania had her career halted when she contracted Lyme disease.
This is a disease caused by a tick bite transferring the bacteria to a person. Shania was bit by a tick while riding a horse in 2003. This caused her to experience dizziness while performing on stage, and she was afraid of losing her balance and falling off the stage. She had to put her career on hold until she could get the disease under control.
Even worse, Lyme disease damaged her vocal cords and changed her voice. She had to have open-throat surgery in 2011 to fix the nerve damage and she said her voice was never the same again.
Shania said that she hopes to connect with Celine at some point to talk about the difficulties. “I know — only speaking from my experience — how horrifying it is to think that something is preventing you from singing, or interfering with that joy in your life,” Shania said (via Us Magazine). She said she wants her to overcome this and be able to sing again.
