There was a time, in the not-so-distant past, when Toby Keith ruled the radio waves. His songs were constantly being played on country radio. Sadly, for his fans, this is no longer the case, according to the award-winning and hit-writing country music megastar. Keith is not getting the radio time he had been getting in the past. As with everything else, Toby Keith has a strong opinion on why his radio time is far less than it has been.
Not Health Related
The lack of radio time and the lack of new songs has nothing to do with Toby Keith’s health. As his fans know, he has been battling stomach cancer for more than a year. Although his cancer diagnosis did slow him down a bit, this was not the reason for the changes in the amount of radio airtime he has been getting lately.
Seeing his health has improved in the past several months, Keith will still not be writing the amount of country songs as before. There are several reasons for this. Most of them are due to the changes in country radio.
Wasting Toby Keith’s Time
Toby Keith is not writing as many country songs as he has done in the past. He explained how writing new material is “kind of wasting your time.” He could write new music, but it would not get the radio time.
Keith is still able to get his music streamed online. Fans will listen to it online, but radio time is not easy to come by these days like it has been before. Because of this, he is not writing music like he did in the past.

‘Flavor Of The Month’ Country Music
Toby Keith recognizes the fact it is not just him who is no longer getting the radio airtime. He knows even “the new people” do not last as long on the radio as they would have just a few years ago.
“They come and go pretty quick because it’s flavor-of-the-month stuff,” Keith said. He understands no one can “just put it out there and [radio] will automatically play it.”
Toby Keith believes he would have to change who he is as well as the type of country songs he would normally write to get the airtime. “I’m not going to change and write that kind of stuff,” he said. It appears Keith will remain the Toby Keith his fans love and respect even though he is sacrificing the time his songs should be getting on the radio.
Who Would Want Toby Keith To Change?
Toby Keith is not going to change and he will not be writing music that is not true to himself just to get radio airtime. With all of his great hits such as “Courtesy of The Red, White and Blue,” Beer For My Horses” and “Should Have Been A Cowboy,” why would he change? What do you think? Should Toby Keith start writing music that will get airtime on the radio? Or, should he remain the man his fans love and write his special brand of country music just with less radio airtime? Will streaming his music be enough for you? Tell us what you think and sound off in the comments below!
Toby Keith songs are great! I hope he never changes the way he writes.
