Keith Urban came up through the Australian music scene in the 1980s and became a country music star in the United States in the 1990s. However, Urban has battled his demons over the years, something he is very open about. Urban even said that he would be in jail if not for country music.

Here is what Urban said about his career and how it saved him from a bleak future.

Keith Urban would be in jail without his music

Keith Urban appeared on the Criss Angel Talking Junkies podcast and he had some interesting things to say about his career. Urban had to make his name first in Australia and then a second time when he moved to Nashville. Through it all, he dealt with one of the biggest roadblocks in the music industry – addiction issues, both with drugs and alcohol.

Urban has always been open about his addiction issues. In 1998, he checked himself into Cumberland Heights in Nashville, a treatment center. In 2006, he ended up in rehab again, this time in the Betty Ford Center in California. The second time was after he married Nicole Kidman. According to the country music star, he dealt with both alcoholism and cocaine addiction.

When asked what he would be doing if he wasn’t a country music star, Urban said there was no second option. “I’d be in jail, probably,” he told Angel. However, Urban luckily had the talent and drive to succeed in music, and that saved him from prison.

Keith Urban also reveals his biggest musical influence

Keith Urban also talked about his biggest influence in music. Before country and rock combined, Urban teased walking that line with his own music. He said that he loved both rock and country, and he didn’t want to choose one over the other. However, his biggest influence was John Mellencamp, who proved that he didn’t have to choose.

Urban said that Mellencamp died an album that was a little bit country called Lonesome Jubilee, but he also did hard rock songs before that like “Hurts So Good.” Mellencamp then released Scarecrow with fiddles and then Lonesome Jubilee had an accordion, fiddle, and acoustic guitars. It all worked together and that is what Urban patterned his career after.

“I get it,” Urban said. “Don’t think about genre or anything. Just … pull all the things you love, your soup, man, your gumbo, and make your gumbo.” Keith Urban has released 12 studio albums and has scored 20 No. 1 singles in the United States. Eight of his albums have gone Platinum and he has won four Grammys over his career.
