It was forty-three years ago this month that the big screen welcomed Dolly Parton and she became a movie icon. Yes, her music career is her legacy. Yet, her movie roles are some of the best out there, and she cemented herself as a quirky but fun actress. What movie brought her cinematic fame? Read on for more details.
Dolly Parton Became A Movie Icon 43 Years Ago
Currently, Dolly Parton is living her best life and embracing all of the good that is coming to her. She is celebrating her highest-ranking album, Rockstar, which features legendary artists from all decades. Dolly teamed up with Miley Cyrus, P!nk, Paul McCartney, and covered Prince for her first rock album. Then, she showed off her amazing bombshell body, further proving she only gets better with age. Everyone wants to be friends with Dolly as she just exudes kindness and warmth. Yet, she is not just a legendary performer but also an actress.
Fans may remember her as the sarcastic hairdresser, Truvy in Steel Magnolias. She starred alongside a young Julia Roberts, Sally Field, and so many legends. However, on December 19th, 1980, Dolly starred in her first role, according to Taste of Country. That film was 9 to 5 in which she also sang the movie’s theme song. In the movie, also starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, Dolly played Doralee Rhodes. They are three hard-working women who finally seek revenge against their boss. It was comedy gold and the cast worked incredibly well together.
9 to 5 exceeded 100 million at the box office which was an incredible feat given they had 10 million to make it. The theme song, which was also written by Parton, was nominated for an Oscar and earned her two Grammys. Additionally, it hit number 1 on the Billboard Country Songs. For fans of the film, they were thrilled to learn, just a few years back, that there was to be a sequel. The ladies were reuniting and excitedly so. Sadly, the script did not work out and there was no longer a movie.
Sadness In Hollywood
Dolly Parton has since opened up about the sad side of Hollywood. It was not at all what she had expected as she thought it was this magical, dreamy place. However, she saw homelessness and those who were desperate to move up, no matter what the cost. This was too much for her to handle and she did not care for it all that much. Though she may have conquered Hollywood and the music industry, she has remained humble. This is probably why her career has spanned decades and generations.
Can you believe it has been forty-three years since 9 to 5 was released? Have you seen it and what are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments below.
