Dolly Parton is sadly not making a 9 to 5 sequel but it is not for a lack of trying. The country superstar made the film forty-three years ago this year. It did so well and became such a classic that there was hope it would have a follow-up. So, what halted this? Read on for more details.
Dolly Parton Not Making 9 To 5 Sequel
Fans know that Dolly Parton is a Jill of many trades. She has conquered pretty much everything that she has tried. Recently, she released her very first rock album and it was her biggest success in the history of her career. She was able to collaborate on Rockstar with P!nk, Miley Cyrus, Pat Benatar, Chris Stapleton, and many more. Additionally, Dolly makes her seventies look better than most people’s twenties. Then, there is her acting career as fans may recall she has had a slew of hits. One notable role was as Truvy the hairdresser in Steel Magnolias. Another was in 9 to 5 as Doralee Rhodes.
Dolly starred alongside Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda as they seek revenge on their atrocious boss. Yet, it was actually hilarious how it all went down. Therefore, fans hoped for a sequel and there was a lot of talk about this happening. More so, the ladies were on board for this and ready to roll. However, according to Country Thang Daily, this ended up getting squashed. Dolly explained why to ET Online:
“I don’t think we’re going to do the sequel. We never could get the script where it was enough different than the first one, and that one turned out so good.”
When the idea was first being floated around, it was at a perfect time, per Dolly, since #MeToo was in full swing:
“I’ve been talking to Lily and Jane … Actually, all these years, we’ve been talking about doing a sequel to 9 to 5 and it never made any real sense until just recently.”
This gave a lot of hope to fans of the iconic film that they would see the three legends reunite on the big screen.
Still A Chance?
Even though the 9 to 5 sequel is no longer happening, Dolly Parton did share some good news for fans of the trio. She noted that she, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda had chatted and they still wanted to work together again. Yes, it would be something completely different but it would bring them back together. So, they seemingly have found a workaround and it might be better than the original plan.
