Lainey Wilson has had a huge year, and she finished it with a bang. After winning several awards and proving to be one of the top female country stars in the world, she got a chance to sing with a legendary band. Lainey and Elle King joined Lynyrd Skynyrd at the New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash celebration.
Here is a look at what she did and a chance to hear her performance.
Lainey Wilson & Elle King perform with Lynyrd Skynyrd
Lynyrd Skynyrd remains one of the most iconic bands to come out of the 1970s. While some key founders died in a plane crash in 1977, the remaining members still travel and perform the band’s biggest hits. This includes their two most beloved songs, “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird.” The band got to perform this year at the New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash celebration in Music City.
They weren’t alone either, as they invited Lainey Wilson and Elle King to sing “Sweet Home Alabama” with them at the event. The band recorded “Sweet Home Alabama” in 1974. Lainey Wilson was born in 1992 – 18 years after the song’s first release. Elle King is a little older, but she was only born in 1989, 15 years after its release.
However, both women were in full force as they sang Skynyrd with Skynyrd on New Year’s Eve. King is a four-time Grammy nominee in both the rock and country categories and Wilson just won nine awards between the ACM and CMA ceremonies in 2023.
Lainey Wilson also performed her own songs
This was a special moment for Lainey Wilson, Elle King, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. However, while Lainey and Elle only sang a few lines here and there in “Sweet Home Alabama,” they both had big moments at the event. Elle hosted it and Lainey also sang her own songs at the show.

Elle King sang Stevie Nicks’ 1981 classic “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.” As for Lainey Wilson, she sang some big songs and proved why she is one of the best things going in country music today. She performed “Grease” and “Heart Like a Truck” to ring in the New Year. She also sang “Wildflowers and Wild Horses” after a short break.
In 2023 alone, Lainey Wilson won the ACM and CMA Female Artist of the Year awards, beating out names like Ashley McBryde, Miranda Lambert, Carly Pearce, and Kelsea Ballerini.
She also has two nominations for the Grammy Awards, which takes place on February 4. She is nominated for Best Country Duo/Group Performance (with Jelly Roll) for “Save Me.” She also picked up a Best Country Album nomination for Bell Bottom Country.
