Long before George Strait earned his title as the King of Country Music, he was fired from the first country band he ever sang for. Not only was he fired, he was let go after his first performance with this band. This was when he and his wife, Norma, were still living in Hawaii in the early 1970s and the “You Look So Good In Love” singer was still in the Army.

The Band Who Fired George Strait

As shocking as it may sound, a country band really did fire George Strait. The band was known as the Country Kings. No one can miss the irony in their name, seeing that the “Check Yes Or No” singer is now the King of Country Music.

The Country Kings was a band in the early 1970s in Hawaii. Not much was ever heard of them. Perhaps this is because the so-called Country Kings fired the future King of Country Music. Any fan of George Strait has no doubt that Hawaiian country band regretted their decision to let him go.

The Reason George Strait Was Fired

There is even more irony to this insane-sounding story. It is the reason George Strait was fired. According to the “Murder On Music Row” singer, the Country Kings let him go because he “wasn’t country enough.” That isn’t something you would normally hear about George Strait.

Because the Country Kings fired George Strait for not being country enough, fans of this country music superstar must wonder just how country of a country singer his first-ever band was expecting. George Strait has made his living in country music singing traditional country music his entire career, which started in the early 1980s. He has 60 number one singles, the record for any solo artist. Country music is hard pressed to find another singer who is more country than George Strait.
