Luke Combs topped the charts with his rendition of Fast Car by Tracy Chapman. Soon, the pair will join forces for a one-of-a-kind performance at the Grammys. What do we know so far about this upcoming duet?
Luke Combs Topped The Charts With His Version Of Fast Car
Longtime listeners of Luke Combs know that he has an extensive catalog of original songs. That didn’t stop him from recording his version of Fast Car, originally written and made famous by Tracy Chapman. Chapman released the song in 1988, as it was on her debut self-titled album.
Luke Combs chose to cover the iconic tune, and put his own spin on the classic. By doing this, he introduced a whole new generation of fans to the song. Because Tracy Chapman is more of a singer/songwriter with a flare for blues, Luke Combs covering it also introduced the song to country fans who may not have heard it before.
Luke Combs’s Cover A Big Hit
Luke Combs’s version of Fast Car was ranked the fifth biggest song of the year in America in 2023. Combs walked away from the most recent CMA’s with the coveted Song of the Year award for it. His cover even topped charts across the board in 2023, proving that, 35 years later, the song still has staying power, and is as relevant now as it was back then.
With as much buzz as Luke Combs generated with his cover song, it’s only fitting that he will be performing at this year’s Grammy ceremony. The 66th Annual Grammy Awards will take place on February 4. The ceremony this year will have Trevor Noah as the host, and it will be held at the Crypto Arena in Los Angeles.
Tracy Chapman Set To Make Return To The Stage For Luke Combs Duet
Not only will Luke Combs perform at this year’s ceremony, but, he will be joined by none other than Tracy Chapman herself. The duo will perform Fast Car in front of all those in attendance. For any fans in the know, there are a few reasons why this upcoming performance is generating as much hype as it is.
Tracy Chapman has only performed for the cameras three times since wrapping up her last tour in 2009. Despite the resurgence in popularity of her tune, thanks to Luke Combs covering it, Chapman has largely stayed out of the public eye. So, the fact that these two will join forces to perform at the Grammys is huge news.
For his part, Combs was extremely respectful in how he handled things with Chapman. Even though he didn’t need it, he sought her blessing before covering her song. It’s likely this show of respect from Combs that got Chapman to agree to perform. Indeed, saying viewers are in for a treat when these two take the stage is certainly an understatement.
