Miranda Lambert released her single “Dead Flowers” way back in 2009. It was the lead single for her latest album. Now, all these years later, Lambert is finally explaining the meaning of this song.
What Is “Dead Flowers” About?
Miranda Lambert wrote “Dead Flowers” because of a relationship she had been in had ended. “I wrote it from a love gone bad point of view,” Lambert said.
The country music superstar explained how her boyfriend at the time had given her flowers. “I had some flowers that I got for Valentine’s Day in a vase on the kitchen table. I was going on the road so I had to throw them in the yard. They were just laying there and it was a really sad image.” Those sad flowers in the yard was exactly how Miranda Lambert was feeling inside.
Miranda Lambert’s view of the song changed. She explained how a woman told her how her daughter had said it was how she felt when her father left her. “That really meant a lot to me, and was such a different take [on] the song.”
“Dead Flowers” Did Not Do Well
Despite the poignant lyrics, “Dead Flowers” never made it very high on the country music charts. Miranda Lambert was sad when it was pulled from the radio. She had put a lot of time and effort into the song. Lambert had even created a music video for the song.
“Dead Flowers” peaked on the charts at Number 37. Despite the fact it never made it to the top spot on the charts or even in the top 20, Miranda Lambert is still very proud of this song that means so much to her.

Miranda Lambert’s Two Sides
Miranda Lambert definitely is not a one-dimensional country music singer and songwriter. She has two very distinct sides that can be seen within her music. Thankfully for her fans, Lambert shows both of those sides.
There is the hard-hitting, take-no-prisoners side of Miranda Lambert. This side can be heard in such songs as “Gunpowder And Lead,” “Mama’s Broken Heart” and “Somethin’ Bad.” Some might consider these songs to be nothing else but sheer “girl power.”
There is also the softer side to Miranda Lambert. “The House That Built Me” falls into that category. The same can be said of “Dead Flowers.”
