Country legend Toby Keith passed away earlier this year. Even though he is gone, his memory lives on and the stories keep pouring out. His daughter Krystal shared a story of her own recently. Toby is known for his patriotism and he never hesitated to step into harm’s way in order to perform for all the troops overseas on USO tours. Now, his daughter shared how she wanted to go with him and he absolutely refused. Keep reading to find out more.
Toby Keith Would Not Let Daughter On USO Tour
Toby Keith loved the military and did not think twice about risking his own safety to go to the Middle East to perform for troops. His daughter Krystal also performs and wants badly to go with him.
However, she shared that letting her go with him is one line he refused to cross. Whiskey Riff shared what Krystal had to say about never getting to go with her dad overseas.
Toby’s love for the United States and the military that protected it was incredible. Throughout his career, he performed for more than 250,000 troops in 17 different countries. Some of these countries included Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo, Cuba, Djibouti, Guam and Kyrgyzstan.
She recalled begging to go and he flat out refused. Krystal said, “I begged to go, but it was such a dangerous thing. He went into, like, dad mode. He was like, ‘No, no, this is really important work I’m going to do, and no, my daughter is not – It’s not something where … I’m going to put you in danger so you can go experience this.’”
He Never Let Danger Stop Him
In 2008 when Toby Keith was performing in Kandahar, Afghanistan, he and more than 2,000 troops were forced to take cover when incoming mortars were aimed at the base. They took cover for more than an hour and when it was over, he went right back to performing.
Even this moment of terror did not stop Toby from supporting the troops and coming back again and again.
Krystal recalled how patriotic her dad was. She said, “He loved the USO tours, and I wish that I would have been able to go on some of those. I did spend time on tour with him.”
She went on to say, “I opened for him from the time I was 14 on. I did the anthem. Anytime I’d go out on tour with him, I’d be like, ‘Hey, can I sing tonight?’ He’d be like, ‘Sure, you can go do the anthem.’”
Toby will always be remembered for his love for the University of Oklahoma and his love for this country.
