Many country fans fully believe that there is ongoing bad blood between Hank Williams Jr. and Garth Brooks. This is based on a quote that many believe came from Hank Jr. badmouthing Brooks. So, did Williams Jr. really say what people think he said about Garth Brooks?
Hank Williams Jr. Has Had A Successful Music Career
When your dad is Hank Williams, and considered to be one of the most influential songwriters of the 20th century, those are some big boots to fill for anyone. Luckily, Hank Williams Jr. has been up to the task over the years. Despite being pushed to follow in his father’s footsteps early on, Hank Jr. found ways to distinguish himself, and carve out his own niche outside of his father’s large shadow.
When you come from, essentially, the stock of country royalty, it can be a tough thing for some people to live up to. When you consider the fact that Hank Williams Jr. had eyes and expectations on him from the day he was born, he has certainly done quite well for himself.
Does Hank Jr. Have A Bone To Pick With Garth Brooks?
There has been a lot of talk going around of Hank Williams Jr. having a beef with another country legend, Garth Brooks. An old quote from November 2023 has been in rotation once again. It alleges that Hank Jr. decided to ditch a show because he did not want to share the stage with Garth Brooks.
More specifically, it alleges that Hank Jr. ditched a Country Legends performance because he did not want to share the stage with Brooks. The actual quote that many attribute to Hank Jr. reads: “I wouldn’t be caught dead on stage with Garth Brooks.”
Did Williams Jr. Actually Say This About Garth Brooks?
With the internet the way it is today, and with so many things going around, it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction. This is especially true in situations like this, where people took the quote and ran with it, whether Williams Jr. said it or not.
It turns out, the above quote was in an article as part of an umbrella of sites known for satire. So, as incendiary as a quote like this is, it turns out that Hank Williams Jr. never actually said this about Garth Brooks.
Hank Williams Jr bowed out of this year’s “Country Legends” show for one reason and one reason only:

Even fact-checking website Snopes debunked this quote as satire, and something that Hank Jr. never actually said. So, despite this quote regularly making the rounds and circulating around different social media platforms, Hank Williams Jr. never actually said this about Garth Brooks.

Hank Jr. Has said this several times privately amongst friends and other artist. All musuc row knew this back in the 90’s. It’s really a shame too because I was a huge Jr & Waylon fan til Garth came around. After they made it known they didn’t like him because of his Rock Star Salary Demand, i found myself unable to be a huge fan of all 3. I still love’em but my money went to GB when it came to concerts.
Also if you’ll check thr archives you’ll see that Alan Jackson and Hank Jr did a song and video making fun of Country music and had a guy dressed up like Garth swinging on a rope like his live shows. They didn’t release it because of yhe crossover fans
