These days, fans are used to seeing country music star Jelly Roll with a huge smile at all times. The singer has had what many would call a meteoric rise in the music industry over the last handful of years. His song “Get By” is used by the classic show College GameDay as their intro in 2024. Things weren’t always this amazing for the famous singer, though. Prior to becoming one of the most beloved members of country music, Jelly Roll needed to turn his life around. One of the catalysts for doing so was the birth of his daughter, Bailee.

His Life Before His Daughter

Before becoming a hit sensation, Jelly Roll often found himself in loads of trouble. He was in and out of jail as a youngster. Yet, despite his shortcomings, he knew he wanted to improve himself. Jelly Roll developed these feelings shortly after the birth of his daughter. The star remembers “sitting in a jail cell, having $17 of honeybuns and potato chips to [his] name.” He knew he would have to make some changes if he wanted to give his daughter the life she deserved.

In an interview with Sunday Today with Willie Geist, Jelly Roll talked about how he felt like scum of the Earth. He said,

“I own one outfit, the one that was in the jail, and here I am responsible for a child. I mean, I was the lowest common denominator in life, you know? I mean, I was scum of the Earth. I was a crack dealer. I was a horrible, horrible human. And I was like, ‘I’ve got to figure this out.'”

Jelly Roll And His Path After His Daughter’s Birth

After getting out of jail, Jelly Roll knew he’d be forced to carve his own path. However, he was a convicted felon, which meant there wouldn’t be many jobs lining up outside of his door. Rather than sulking in misery, he began perfecting his musical skills. As time progressed, the “Son of a Sinner” singer found his voice and started to rise in popularity. After putting in years of work and sacrifice, Jelly Roll has truly become a staple in the country music community.

One amazing thing is he does to give back to the community is hiring convicted felons to help him on tour. He knows the challenges of finding work with a checkered background and wants to help folks who made mistakes find their way in life again. Jelly Roll’s story should serve as inspiration to anyone going through challenging times. Many people want to run away from their pasts, but the country star embraces his. He’s well aware that there are people out there who need to hear his story to know there’s hope for them.
