Jelly Roll is no stranger to AA meetings and now he is opening up about attending his first one at just fourteen years old. So, what prompted him to head into one at that young and did it leave a lasting impression? Keep reading to see what Jelly thought of his first AA meeting.
Jelly Roll Details 1st AA Meeting At 14
It is no secret that Jelly Roll spent most of his formative years getting into trouble. He knows that he scared his mother, Donna DeFord and she was always answering his calls at all hours of the night. Yet, he does admit he was a horrible criminal and music saved his life. When his daughter, Bailee was born over sixteen years ago, Jelly was locked up so he missed that pivotal moment. It was clear things had to change and he has been working hard ever since to be the best father, husband, son, and man possible.
However, he often shares tales from his dark past. This helps to keep him accountable. More so, Jelly visits prisons and detention centers. His goal is to inspire inmates to see there is light and they do not have to go backward if they truly do not want to. He has come so far in his life, and become such a success, and he feels that this is possible for anybody. Yet, at fourteen, things were not so great and he was ‘court ordered’ to attend his first AA meeting.
According to Page Six, Jelly does not fully recollect attending Alcoholics Anonymous for the first time:
Oh goodness. I don’t fully remember my first real meeting ’cause I was court-ordered at like 14. I don’t remember it as much as I should.
He spoke about this on The Highway which airs on SiriusXM. Though his first meeting is blurry, one meeting does stand out to the father of two:
But, I definitely remember the first time that I found solace in those rooms, or the first time that I kind of got introduced to the concept of this and how much stuff I’ve taken from them rooms.
He encourages any and everybody to go to at least one meeting because they are all-encompassing:
I still think that there is something from it that is, you know, the good ones are like good theater. They’ll make you listen, you’ll learn, you’ll laugh and you’ll cry.
Straightened Life
Now, Jelly Roll’s idea of a good time is a cold plunge before his shows on his Beautifully Broken Tour. He has lost around 300 pounds and is keeping up his health journey. Jelly works out, he eats rights, cold plunges, and is in the sauna. Currently, he is on the high of his new album, Beautifully Broken, reaching the top of the charts. It just came out on Friday, October 11th but it is already making waves. All of the proceeds from the pre-sales went to charity so that was an amazing incentive.
