Dolly Parton Breaks Down Meaning Of ‘Most Personal’ Song
Over the last several decades, Dolly Parton has been a voice to be reckoned with. She can make fans dance or break their hearts at the same time. After being a country icon for years, she finally released her first rock album and it was her biggest success. She has delved into different arenas including animal products, baked goods, a cookbook with her sister, and most recently, a makeup line. Additionally, she has been recognized for her quirky acting roles in 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias.
Dolly has attempted to take a step back to care for her husband, Carl Dean though she admittedly always has to stay busy. Her hand has to be in a pot or two or more to keep her happy. It has been a running joke that no one has ever seen her husband and they question his existence. Reba McEntire and Andy Cohen just discussed this on his SiriusXM show. Yet, they allegedly took time to go away and enjoy themselves. At the same time, Dolly has taken the time to share the meaning behind the “most personal” song she has written.
According to People, Dolly is proud of every song from her illustrious career. However, there is one that is extremely personal and she shares why:
I think the one that’s most personal to me is the lil’ ‘Coat of Many Colors,’ because it talks about my mom, my parents, and kind of gives you an insight. It also covers bullying, acceptance and all that.
So, it may have started with one mission but it ended up with another incredible and timeless message. The song dates back to 1971 and is about Dolly’s mother creating a coat for her out of rags.
More Beauties
Though “Coat of Many Colors” is very personal to Dolly Parton, she also had to mention “Jolene” simply because it is the one most covered:
Of course, the one that’s most recorded is ‘Jolene.’ That seems to be the favorite. Do you know that song has been recorded, somebody told me, 450 times in the last 52 years? I’m so proud of it.
Then, there is “I Will Always Love You” which was later covered by the late Whitney Houston for The Bodyguard. She mentioned what a phenomenal love song it is. Dolly also clarified if she wrote “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” on the same day. She did not:
I don’t know if I wrote them on the same day. but they were found on the same cassette, and so I wrote them during that period of time.
