Country superstar and actor Billy Ray Cyrus is singing again after revealing that he suffered a near-death experience. The 64-year-old has been through a lot over the last several years, and it has played out in the public eye. However, nothing can touch his illness, but what exactly went down? Keep reading for more details.
Billy Ray Cyrus Discusses Almost Dying
The last few years have been a nightmare for Billy Ray Cyrus. He and Tish Cyrus finally got divorced, and he moved on with the much younger Firerose. That caused a rift in his family as he and his kids did not support this relationship. Despite that, Billy Ray and Firerose married, but they ultimately got divorced after she alleged abuse. At the same time, he claimed that she used him for money and actually wanted the marriage annulled. Then, his son, Trace Cyrus, put out a public statement, pleading for his father to get help.

Ultimately, Billy Ray reconciled with his daughter, Miley Cyrus, and found love with actress Elizabeth Hurley. Now, he is singing again, but this comes after a horrible health struggle. In 2024, the singer was diagnosed with vocal paralysis. He admits he does not know what happened, but two years prior, his mother passed away. Billy Ray then found himself being admitted to the hospital, on the same floor where she died:
I don’t know exactly how it evolved. It was my worst nightmare. Two years before that, my mom had died in that hospital, in the very floor that I was on.
His body was swelling up; it appeared he had sepsis, and he told his team to get his “affairs in order.” In an incredible twist, he healed, and no one understood what had transpired:
I had a prayer answered. That’s a miracle.
It came with a price, and that was losing his voice. Billy Ray Cyrus did not think he would sing until his youngest, Noah Cyrus, came to him with a song, and that changed his life. He worked tirelessly to rehabilitate his voice, and now he is back.
A Prayer Answered
The song was written by Billy Ray Cyrus’ son, Braison, but the credit goes to one person: Billy Ray’s grandson, Bear, 5:
In this very broken moment of my life, my little grandson Bear looked at me and said, ‘Try again.’ And up until that moment, he had never spoken to me at all. I wasn’t even sure if he knew my name. In that moment I thought, ‘He’s telling you something.’ Is it about love? Music? Somehow, I got to try again at both. So I’m learning to try again.
He also had the love and support of his partner of a year, Elizabeth Hurley, who never let him doubt himself. Now, after fourteen years, Billy Ray will release The Hill. Fans are praying for him and his voice. The Nashville, Tennessee, resident is ready to take on the world and is excited for what is to come.
