It may be hard to believe, but Johnny Cash, the legendary Man In Black, was once banned, banned for life, from performing at the Grand Ole Opry. In his early years as a country music singer, the “Boy Named Sue” singer was known as a bad boy. He had more than one incident that led to his negative personna.
The Reason The Grand Ole Opry Banned Cash
Johnny Cash was banned from the Grand Ole Opry because he got wild on stage. So wild the manager of the Grand Ole Opry had his doubts the “Walk The Line” singer was fit to perform there. Cash’s fans wondered if he would ever sing again on the most famous of all country music stages.
In 1965, the wild Johnny Cash broke stage lights at the Grand Ole Opry. It was no surprise – he was drunk, probably too drunk to be performing anywhere. There were harsh consequences for his drunken behavior. He was told he would never perform there again.
Making Matters Worse
Being banned from the Grand Ole Opry was just the start of a horrible night for Johnny Cash. After his damage-causing performance, Cash borrowed June Carter’s car. Seeing he was in no condition to drive, he ran her Cadillac off the road. He sustained injuries to his face when he hit the steering wheel.
It doesn’t end there though. The officer who was at the scene of the accident turned out to be Rip Nix. Nix was the husband of June Carter at the time of the accident.
Positive Grand Ole Opry Moment For Johnny Cash
Despite being banned from the Grand Ole Opry, Johnny Cash did have many positive moments performing there. The most positive of all was his first performance almost a decade before he was banned.
Johnny Cash made his Grand Ole Opry debut in 1956. It was on that night he met his future wife, June Carter. She was part of the Carter Family, one of the most famous and talented of the many country music families. Although they didn’t marry for many years, Johnny Cash was destined to marry June Carter. Together, they shared one of the happiest of country music country marriages.

Couldn’t Keep The Man In Black Away
Despite Johnny Cash’s banishment from The Grand Ole Opry, the “Ring of Fire” singer returned in 1968. He performed there countless times, both alone and with June Carter Cash for decades. He remained a member of the Grand Ole Opry until his death in 2003.
