Country star Ty Herndon has quite a life story, and he has seen the darkness. In the midst of it all, he was the victim of a traumatic sexual assault. Yet, he has finally learned how not to let it steal his life from him any longer. Keep reading for more on what he is sharing and has been internalizing.
Ty Herndon Won’t Let Assault Rule Him
Growing up in the spotlight is not an easy thing, and a lot of good and bad can come from it. Sadly, country singer Ty Herndon learned the hard way that being your authentic self while on the rise is anything but easy. He struggled with his sexuality as he believed that being straight worked best for his image. Plus, Ty thought that was what those around him really wanted. Therefore, he dated women and even married Renee Posey, to whom he remained wed for a decade.

In the midst of all of the confusion and struggles to figure out who he was, Ty was developing his career. The year was 1983, and he was performing at Nashville, Tennessee’s Opryland. From this gig, Ty was offered a chance to go on Star Search, but he had no idea what was coming next. He ended up going to dinner with a much older male staffer who ended up sexually assaulting him:
It broke my heart. You cannot make sense of it.
However, Ty went on to blame himself for what happened that evening, rather than realizing it was never his fault. As time went on, the country star opted to look into how other men handled being in the same position. As he noted, women often speak on it, but men stay silent:
We’ve seen so many brave women come forward and change the world through their stories. There’s still been a massive silence when it comes to men who have lived and gone through this.
Learning To Love
After accepting who he was and what he had been through, Ty Herndon was able to find true love. The country superstar married Alex Schwartz and recently decided to write a candid memoir, What Mattered Most: A Memoir. He has been through so much: addiction, self-hate, mental health issues, and more. Maybe he can help someone else through his beautiful words.
