Charley’s history

Charley Pride remembers stories of walking four miles to school and life not being easy. He has shared those stories, but country music has made his life nothing like the way he grew up. He actually picked cotton to be able to afford his first guitar at a young age. This shows he wasn’t afraid of hard work. Charley Pride also served in the military for two years. He was one of 11 children.

His song “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’,” topped the country charts for five weeks and earned a song of the year Grammy. This is one song that so many people know Charley Pride for. Country music historian Bill C. Malone spoke of Charley Pride and his great work. Here is what he had to say.

“He was the right singer at the right time in history. Pride definitely profited from the heightened mood of racial tolerance promoted in the United States by the civil rights movement and from the desires of the country music industry to improve its image and broaden its audience.”

With lyrics like you can see below how could you not love listening to his voice?

“When ever I chance to meet, some old friends on the street
They wonder how does a man get to be this way
I’ve always got a smiling face, anytime & any place
And every time they ask me why I just smile & say
You’ve got to kiss an angel good morning
And let her know you think about her when you’re gone
Kiss an angel good morning
And love her like the devil when you get back home”
