Country music fans may find it hard to believe, but today would have been the 92nd birthday of the legendary Johnny Cash. Sadly, the world lost “The Man in Black” in September of 2003. The “I Walk The Line” singer may be gone, but he has not been forgotten by his fans. More importantly, he has not be forgotten by his only son, John Carter Cash. His son took the time to honor the life and legacy of late Johnny Cash.
The Legacy Of Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash was one of the greatest singers and songwriters this world has ever known. His greatest legacy is not the impact he made on the music industry. His greatest legacy the face was a man of great faith, a loving husband to June Carter Cash and a living example of personal greatness to all of his children.
Of course, there is his music. It has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. Johnny Cash’s music crosses genre lines. It speaks to people from all walks of life.
How Johnny Cash Became “The Man in Black”
Cash overcame extreme poverty to become the legend he is known as today. He battled through addiction to both alcohol and drugs, with the help of June Carter Cash, to become the husband and father he wanted to be. Johnny Cash took the time to help those society had thrown away and forgotten about. He became “The Man in Black” so he would never forget the pain of others and to put some of that pain on himself.
“I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, livin’ in the hopeless, hungry side of town,” Johnny Cash explained in an interview. “I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, but is there because he’s a victim of the times.”
John Carter Cash Honors His Father
John Carter Cash is now honoring his father. Much like his father, the words of John Carter are sharp and clear, getting to the heart of the matter without any fuss.
“Dad, although you are very much alive in many ways, I feel I get closest to you through your words,” Johnny Cash’s son wrote. “I am still reading, still listening and still learning. And in doing so, I appreciate you more every day.”

“You lived several lives in your 71 years, but they can all be distilled down to two: first, John R, Cash, the dedicated father, husband and mentor to family; and second, Johnny Cash,” John Carter Cash went on to write. “I love and have always loved them both…but how do I stay in touch with you, Dad — with who you really were? I have done this by studying your lyrics, poetry and other writings.”
