Sara Evans was a contestant on Season 3 of DWTS. She is finally ready to reveal the truth about her abrupt exit. Keep reading for all the details.
Country Singer Thinks She Would Have Won Dance Competition
Country singer Sara Evans was an early frontrunner on Season 3 of Dancing With The Stars. She was paired with pro dancer Tony Dovolani.
Other celebrity contestants on that season included actor Mario Lopez, talk show host Jerry Springer, and football star Emmitt Smith.
The “A Little Bit Stronger” singer consistently received good scores from the judges that put her in the middle of the pack. However, her scores were improving before she abruptly quit the show in Week 6.
During a recent episode of her Diving In Deep podcast, Sara said that she “probably would have won” if she hadn’t left the show early. NFL hall-of-famer Emmitt Smith eventually nabbed the coveted Mirrorball Trophy.
The ’90s country star candidly confessed that the dance competition was one of the “hardest times in my life,” especially when she had to travel back and forth to pre-booked gigs and the DWTS live show.
The situation was only made more difficult because her marriage to Craig Schelske was crumbling.
Sara Evans Reveals Truth Behind Her Abrupt DWTS Exit
When Sara Evans quit the show in 2006, she chalked it up to her children being traumatized by their parents divorcing. The singer temporarily moved with her three children to Beverly Hills during her time on DWTS. Her estranged husband stayed in Oregon, but came to every live show in California.
The singer alleged that it was all an act. She said on the podcast, “He wanted to be at every episode and come down here and be seen on TV, on camera, and also at the same time, he was trying to make a case against me to show that I was working and not being a good mom.”

Sara went on to reveal more details about what led to her quitting the show. According to the singer, there was an incident involving her husband while they were all out to dinner with their children and her DWTS partner. While she didn’t go into specifics, she said that Tony Dovolani had to intervene.
The “Suds in the Bucket” singer went on to claim that her children were traumatized by the blow-up, which is why she left the show, per PEOPLE magazine.
Recently Reconciled With Ex-Husband
Sara Evans recently made headlines with the news that she was reconciling with her ex-husband. But it’s not the one who caused her DWTS exit.
She didn’t get back together with Craig Schelske. They officially divorced in 2006. She went on to marry former football player Jay Barker in 2008. They divorced in 2022 but are giving their relationship another chance.
Dancing With The Stars returns this fall for Season 33.
