The Mavericks frontman Raul Malo revealed he’s battling cancer. He shares how he plans to fight for his health and if it will affect the tour.

The band is a rarity in country music. Instead of having roots in Nashville, the band was formed in Miami, Florida in 1989. The current band members include frontman Raul Malo, Paul Deakin on drums, lead guitarist Eddie Perez and Jerry Dale McFadden on keyboards.

Original member Robert Reynolds is Trisha Yearwood’s ex-husband. He was fired from the band in 2014.

The Mavericks had their biggest hit in 1996 with the song “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down.” The band disbanded for the first time in 2000. They reunited in 2003 but broke up again after their comeback was unsuccessful.

The band attempted another comeback in 2011 and performed at the Stagecoach music festival in California the following year. The Mavericks continued to release albums and tour. They nabbed Grammy nominations in the Best Americana Album in 2015 and 2017. They previously won a Grammy in 1996 for Best Performance By A Duo for their song “Here Comes The Rain.”

The Mavericks frontman Raul Malo took to social media to share some personal information with fans of the band. He revealed that he was just recently diagnosed with cancer after a routine exam.

According to Taste of Country, two cancerous spots were found in the singer’s intestinal system after a series of tests. He revealed that he will start chemo after the July 4th holiday.

Country music fans just lost Toby Keith to cancer earlier this year. But Malo assured fans that the prognosis is good.

“[My medical team has] reassured me that this is a very common form of cancer, and my odds are good.”

The band just released a new album called Moon & Stars in May. They’re scheduled to hit the road this month on a tour. Will The Mavericks cancel the tour amid the lead singer’s health issues?

Shares Status Of Tour

The tour for the new album is scheduled through December 2024. But if the band’s frontman is seeking medical treatment, what happens to the tour?

Malo addressed the issue in his social media post. He said that the tour would go on but some dates may have to be rescheduled.

“Some of the shows may be affected this year as we navigate this situation and see how the therapy goes.”

He ended his announcement with a warning for fans to take care of their own health.

“Go see a doctor. Be proactive in your health. It’ll help fight whatever ails you. Stay healthy, take care of yourselves and I’ll see you out on the road.”
