His laid-back personality and apparent love for everyone have made him a fan favorite, even among those who aren’t country music fans. However, Nelson’s life wasn’t always filled with glitz and glam. How Willie Nelson Truly Felt About Being Poor

During a 1992 interview with Monica Kaufman, Nelson was asked if he was scared about ever being poor again. Tons of fans would assume that the singer would be afraid to go back to his life after living lavishly, thanks to a successful career. However, Nelson flipped the script. He said:

“No, I’ve been dirt poor and I wasn’t that unhappy. Of course, back then, being dirt poor is different than being dirt poor today. We had a garden in the back of the house where we grew our own food and we raised our own meat.”
