Lyle Lovett has been in the music business a long time, and he has plenty of hits to his name. However, based on a fan account of a recent concert of his, there seems to be legitimate reason to be concerned. So, what’s going on with the singer, and what did the concert-goer have to say?

Lyle Lovett Has Been In The Music Biz A Long Time

Lyle Lovett has had a long career that spans decades. He was signed to MCA Records in 1986, and he released his debut album not long after that. Over the years, he put together an impressive career, and certainly not one for anyone to scoff at.

Lovett did not begin writing songs until he went to Texas A&M University in the late 1970s. So, that accounts for decades of writing music under his belt. In 2022, he released the studio album 12th of June, proving that, all these years later, he still has stories to tell and songs to sing.

Fan Reveals ‘Sad’ Lovett Show

These days, Lyle Lovett is 67 years old, and while he is still cranking out good music and still putting on shows, the way that one fan tells it from a recent concert experience, it may be time for the Houston, Texas native to hang it up and quit touring.

One recent concert-goer to a Lyle Lovett show described the experience as “sad,” writing: “The first song, my heart sank. His voice is shot; there’s clearly something wrong with him. It was difficult to listen to, and made me feel really uncomfortable. I felt bad for him. After one song he left the stage and the band played an instrumental, but he was back after that. He seemed in good spirits (seemingly not ill), and this didn’t seem like a cold/ laryngitis/ bronchitis type of issue, as his speaking voice was normal.”

The fan continued, writing: “Once he was singing a line, his pitch was fine, and his sustain was fine, he could even reach higher notes, but even then his enunciation was odd at times. I hate to say this, but if you’ve ever heard a deaf person speak, they have a characteristic speaking manner that is somehow a bit “off”, and Lyle was singing similar to that. The problem was especially apparent at the beginning of lines, as if once his vocal cords got moving, they worked okay, but getting them started was a problem (that my non-technical description that may not be how vocal cords work). To sum it up, the way Robert Kennedy Jr speaks is how Lyle was singing. Even aside from my emotional response to what has happened to him, his singing was unpleasant and it was hard to listen to.”

Not The First Time Fans Have Brought Attention To Lyle Lovett’s Voice

This certainly is not the first time that viewers have brought attention to Lyle Lovett’s singing voice, and it most likely won’t be the last time, either. Some have blamed his drawl over the years as a reason that makes him hard to understand, and others chalk it up to age catching up with him. Either way, other fans had a lot to say about this issue as well.

  • One commenter said: “This makes me sad. I saw him in the ’90s at Wolf Trap, with Roseanne Cash opening and it’s probably my favorite concert ever. I had a similar experience with Willie a few years ago. Age takes everything”
  • Another person said: “The problem is they surround themselves with yes-men. There are many boomer artists, no matter how great their catalogs are; just don’t have the physical ability to perform anymore. I’m not saying this to mean, it’s just a fact of life. As a 50-something there are many things I can’t do as well as I did in my 20s.”
