Country singer Carly Pearce was diagnosed with pericarditis last year. She shared a health update and revealed how she manages her heart condition. Keep reading for the latest.

Carly Pearce Says Doctor ‘Dismissed’ Health Concerns

Carly Pearce was about to kick off a major tour when she got some shocking health news last year. After dealing with symptoms for quite some time, she finally got a diagnosis. The shortness of breath and other symptoms she had were due to pericarditis.

She explained more about her symptoms during an interview with TODAY after going public with her health struggle last year.

“I had a really debilitating chest pain that was only relieved if I bent over like this (leaning forward), and that’s a classic symptom of pericarditis,” she explained.

“And then when you lay back, it gets way worse, because that wall is kind of inflamed around your heart. I just had a really intense shortness of breath,” she added.

The country singer recently spoke with Fox News about the importance of advocating for yourself. “My biggest piece of advice for anybody is: Listen to your body and be your own advocate because a lot of doctors dismissed me, and I was persistent until I got a diagnosis,” the “truck on fire” singer said.

What Is Pericarditis

Pericarditis is one of those conditions that sounds scarier than it usually is. Simply put, it’s inflammation of the pericardium – the thin, protective sac that surrounds your heart. Think of it like a sleeping bag around your heart getting irritated and swollen.

The most telling sign is chest pain. It often feels better when you sit up and lean forward, and worse when you lie down. It’s like your body’s way of finding the most comfortable position for your irritated heart. The pain can be sharp and stabbing, or sometimes just a persistent ache right in the center of your chest.

Most people recover fully with simple treatments like anti-inflammatory medications. It’s usually a short-term condition. However, it can sometimes come back, which doctors call recurrent pericarditis.

How She Manages The Heart Condition

Pericarditis can’t be cured, but it can be managed. Carly Pearce told Fox News that she’s doing “a lot better” now, especially after finding the right diagnosis. She made huge adjustments to her tour to help her stay healthy.

“With a busy schedule, I just have to maintain balance more, maybe not going a thousand percent when I’m running, or maybe walking on a day that I feel a little bit less myself and just trying to figure out ways to keep my mind and my body just more calm,” Pearce said.

“You only get one heart.” she explained. The “hummingbird” singer puts her money and time into raising awareness. She often supports the American Heart Association, including attending the Red Dress Collection Concert earlier this year.

Carly Pearce has focused on her health after the heart condition diagnosis, but she hasn’t left music behind. She wraps up the Hummingbird World Tour in Nashville in May. This summer she will join heavy hitters Wynonna Judd and more country stars on tour with Little Big Town.
