It seems like just yesterday but also long ago when news broke that country icon Naomi Judd was dead. This week marks the third anniversary since she passed away. A new documentary delves into the family secrets and reveals how her death brought her family back together again. Keep reading to find out more.
Naomi Judd Died From Suicide
Naomi Judd was one of the most beloved singers in the music industry. She was also known for her acting roles. But despite being loved by the public, she struggled with mental health demons. She was one of the first celebrities to publicly speak out about her mental health issues. Unfortunately, being transparent about her struggles didn’t save her life.

On May 30, 2022, Naomi Judd ended her life with a gun. Her daughter, Ashley, was in the house at the time but briefly stepped out of the room. Her mother took that opportunity to end her life. Ashley and Wynonna Judd didn’t make any attempt to hide how and why their mother took her life. They spoke about it very openly to help raise awareness about the important of mental health.
Previously Feuding Sisters, Wynonna & Ashley Lean On Each Other
It’s been well documented over the years that Naomi Judd’s two daughters, Wynonna and Ashley, didn’t always get along. Ashley was often painted as jealous of her mom’s bond with Wynonna. Multiple outlets reported after the singer’s death that she wrote a terse suicide note banning her eldest daughter from attending her funeral.

Naomi and Wynonna Judd found great success in the 1980s and 90s as the country duo The Judds. The group disbanded in the early 90s due to Naomi’s health issues. They continued to reunite over the years for special events. The Judds were supposed to be inducted into the Country Hall of Fame on May 1, 2022, just one day after Naomi Judd’s death. In light of their mother’s passing, her daughters accepted the award together. It was the beginning of their reconciliation.
The Judd family tried their best to keep their family issues out of the press. They put on happy faces but behind the scenes, things weren’t as perfect as they seemed.
The family plans to expose all the secrets in a new documentary. Actress Ashley Judd seemed to hint at suffering abuse at the hands of a family member. Abuse that her mother didn’t know about. The documentary will also address her relationship with her older sister, Wynonna.
The two have been leaning on each other since their mother’s death. In a strange way, losing their mom brought them closer.
Naomi Judd’s Husband Reveals How Family Came Together After Death
The “Love Can Build A Bridge” singer married Larry Strickland in 1989. He took on the role as stepfather to Naomi’s children. He spoke to PEOPLE magazine ahead of the documentary’s release. Strickland opened up about how losing Naomi Judd helped bring the family back together.
“We all had to come together around this trauma, this tragic event. And it, of course, opened our eyes about how short life can be and how fleeting,” he said about his newfound bond with his stepdaughters.
The four-part docuseries airs on May 10th and May 11th on Lifetime.
