Many people leave the music industry for various reasons, but one had to back away, feeling country was becoming too “political.” They spoke out about the problems they faced and why it was best to get away, but will they return? Keep reading for more details on what they had to say.
Star Bashes ‘Political’ Country Industry
The music industry is a mix of all types of people, which is what makes it so incredible. Yet, with anything popular, politics does creep in, and that can be a bitter pill to swallow. Not everyone wants their favorites with a side of activism and simply wants to enjoy the concert-going experience. When it comes to country, that is not always entirely possible. It can be very Americana, conservative, or liberal, and for one artist, this has caused them to step back from the industry.
Maren Morris has never been one to hold her tongue. Brittany Aldean shared a social media post regarding makeup and used the caption:
I’d really like to thank my parents for not changing my gender when I went through my tomboy phase. I love this girly life.
This triggered Maren, who came out as bisexual on June 9, 2024. She responded to Brittany by calling her “Insurrection Barbie,” which did not go over well. Eventually, Maren, who was previously married to Ryan Hurd for six years, opted to leave country music. She was searching for what fit her, but when confronted about her exit, the thirty-five-year-old claimed she never actually left the genre. Rather, Maren was expanding her horizons. However, she has since changed her tune and admits country music had become too “political.”
Although Maren knew she was successful, she saw that she was in a very political sphere. She noted that her first album was being publicized during President Trump’s first term. It made her see how things had flipped to the political side in a way she had never seen in the past. The single mom went on to add:
It’s really heartbreaking because I love my Texas roots, I love country music, I love Nashville – I live here [and] I have not lived anywhere else in the last 15 years — but it’s been very hot. Like, no one is very friendly.
Stepping Away
Maren Morris knows that going to award shows is all part of the game, but she does not feel great about them anymore. The Arlington, Texas native feels the temperature is very off at them, despite her attempt to be kind. Unfortunately, it does not feel like that has been reciprocated, so she has taken a few steps back. There have been many outwardly political country stars who have remained successful. Dolly Parton has never had a problem expressing her beliefs, and maybe it is the humble way she speaks out.

At the end of the day, Maren knows not everyone will want to listen to her, and she is okay with that. She may lose fans because of her beliefs, but it is a risk she is taking.
