Heartworn Highways is coming to DVD and Blu-Ray. Kino Lorber today announced the Blu-ray and DVD releases of Heartworn Highways, James Szalapski’s newly-restored 1976 documentary, and Heartworn Highways Revisited, Wayne Price’s sequel.

The latter film celebrates the contemporary musicians carrying on the tradition of the Outlaw Country movement that was captured in the original documentary.

These two county music documentaries—Heartworn Highways and Heartworn Highways Revisited— are being released on DVD and Blu-Ray that you need to include in your country music history collection.

In the mid-‘70s, filmmaker James Szalapski documented the then rarely heard, “outlaw country.”

Inspired by outlier artist and long-haired Willie Nelson’s embrace of progressive attitudes and audiences, a younger generation of artists including Townes Van Zandt, David Alan Coe, Steve Earle, and Guy Clark popularized and developed the outlaw sound.

The genre dipped into rock, folk, and bluegrass, always with an acoustic edge that was missing from mainstream Nashville country.

About the two films

This newly-restored documentary includes rarely-captured performances of the aforementioned musicians as they perfected this then-new style and helped change the course of country music history.
