Carrie Underwood says she related to her song, “Before He Cheats” from her own personal experience.

While fans aren’t sure how anyone could possibly cheat on Carrie, allegedly it happened!

Earlier this year, she appeared on Sirius XM’s Howard Stern Show, to promote her new Sirius channel, Carrie’s Country. The channel became available in June, and while they were chatting, they got on the topic of her hit song, “Before He Cheats.”

Carrie Was Top 10 On Billboard Mainstream Top 40

From her debut studio album, Some Hearts, it went on to become a massive crossover hit and #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for five weeks straight. Her song even hit top ten on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 charts.

The song was written by Chris Tompkins and Josh Kear, but it actually started out as a song for Gretchen Wilson. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for her.

Carrie told Howard that she and her label were really nervous about releasing the song. She said it was much more aggressive than the single she release prior, which was her huge hit, “Jesus Take The Wheel.” These songs are totally different.

She briefly joked that she hadn’t really destroyed anyone’s car, but the fun part about music is, you can play a character that is much different than who you are:

“That’s the fun thing about music. You get to play a character. You do get to sing about things, or write things, or make music videos or whatever, about things that you wouldn’t actually do in your life.”

She followed with, “But it is fun to get into character and act like you would. It’s usually towards the end of the show or it’s the encore, and I feel like immediately when it comes in, the audience just starts bumping.” Carrie did a great job playing the character in her video. This isn’t the typical Carrie we are used to seeing.

Lastly, “There’s this weird little undulation thing that just starts happening, the crowd comes alive.”

Carrie Comes Clean

She stated, “At the time I was young, I was in my 20’s and in college. And I feel like that was a very big moment where it was like, I really thought I knew this person, and t turns out I really didn’t know this person at all.”

She added that she might have not really even been in love as she looks back: “Probably not as in love as a 20-something year old could be, you know?”

Carrie said revenge isn’t really something she thinks about when it comes to that relationship now, but, in the end, she did definitely get the last laugh:

“I don’t think about it much anymore, but earlier in my career thinking about, he’s probably in the grocery store checkout line and I’m on a magazine. There’s a little pettiness.”
