Fate Of ‘Twitty City’ Mansion Revealed

Conway Twitty was a legendary American country singer and songwriter. He was born on September 1, 1933, and passed away on June 5, 1993. Twitty had an incredibly successful career, with 55 number one hits on various country music charts, making him one of the most successful artists of the 20th century.

In the 1980s, the singer’s home in Henderson, Tennessee, became known as “Twitty City,” a tourist spot that featured a museum and more. The hot spot was auctioned off after his death.

A devastating storm swept through the area in late 2023 put the property in danger of demolition. The Tennessean shared an update in January that the mansion will now be restored.

Conway Twitty’s legacy continues to live on through the estate and his music extensive catalog. His music was so well-loved that it even made its way into space.

Classic Conway Twitty Song Played In Outer Space

“Lead Me On,’ “Tight Fittin’ Jeans,” and his duet with Loretta Lynn, “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man” are just a few of his songs that went to the top of the charts. But there’s another song from Conway Twitty that is so iconic, it was played into the void of outer space.

“Hello Darlin'” was released in 1970 and quickly rose to the top of the charts. It spend four weeks at Number One on the Billboard Hot Country charts. It later became a concert staple for the singer, who crooned the song to open his shows.

In 1975, during the height of the Apollo program, the legendary song was played by American astronauts on board the Apollo module. The song was broadcast to Russian cosmonauts aboard the Soyuz 19 spacecraft, making it one of the most unique and memorable moments in the history of music in space.

The country singer re-recorded the song in Russian. According to Whiskey Riff, Conway Twitty enlisted the help of a professor from the University of Oklahoma to teach him the language.

The song was renamed “Privet Radost” in Russian. The singer discussed in his autobiography the difficulty of translating the lyrics into Russian.

“We went around and around, and it took him forever to understand that you don’t just holler ‘Privet Radost’ at a woman.”

TV cameras captured the moment the song was played on the spacecraft. “All of a sudden, the talking stopped and the song started playing: ‘Privet Radost.’ That song was played in Russian all around the world. I don’t know how many millions of people heard it–the only time anything like that had ever happened! It was a tremendous experience,” the singer wrote in his autobiography.
