Dolly Parton Stays Famous Interview With Barbara Walters
Dolly Parton is a national treasure. As hard as it is to believe, she was once an up-and-coming singer trying to make a name for herself. During the peak of her career in the late ’70s and early ’80s, she was a regular on primetime television talk shows.
Her interview 1977 interview with Barbara Walters resurfaced on the internet a few years ago. While Barbara Walters is widely regarded as a professional, her questions to Dolly Parton came under fire in present day as “tacky.”
During the interview, Barbara Walters scolds the entertainer for wearing blonde wigs and so much makeup, saying she didn’t need it. She followed up by asking the “I Will Always Love You” singer if she ever felt like a joke.
“Actually, all these years, the people have thought the joke was on me, but it’s actually been on the public. I know exactly what I’m doing, and I can change it at any time,” Dolly schooled the TV host.

But that wasn’t the first or last time Dolly Parton had to deal with inappropriate questions. She was a frequent guest on The Tonight Show when Johnny Carson was hosting it.
He asked her if it bothered her when people made jokes or comments about her body. Dolly Parton said that she was used to it. “I’ve always been pretty well blessed. She then added, “People are always asking if they’re real,” she said about her breasts.
Johnny Carson chimed in that he “would never” ask that, but then proceeded to make an even creepier comment. According to Meaww, the talk show host confessed, “But I would give about a year’s pay to peek under there.”
Dolly Parton laughed the comment off, but that kind of comment wouldn’t fly these days.
They Remained Friends Despite Creepy Banter
Johnny Carson hosted the late night talk show from 1962 until 1992 when he was replaced with Jay Leno. Dolly Parton continued to be a regular guest even after his creepy comments about her body. She even returned to the show in 1979 to perform a song she wrote just for the talk show host.
“I went from pop beads to diamonds, from car coats to fur / From K-Mart to Guccis, from here no tellin’ where / From Hillbilly Heaven to a penthouse on the coast / But I never really made it till The Johnny Carson Show,” Dolly Parton crooned for Johnny Carson.
