At this point, it goes without saying that 2020 probably wasn’t the best year for anyone. However, at NBC’s New Year’s Eve television special, Blake Shelton announces the contrary is the case for him. According to Taste of CountryShelton share’s a sweet sentiment about what made 2020 a great year for him. “I got engaged to Gwen Stefani. I don’t care what else happened besides that. That made it a great year for me.”

Blake Shelton premieres a new song– “Minimum Wage.”

While the title “Minimum Wage,” seems pretty par for the course for a country song, it’s not what fans may think. Here’s what we know. The music video for the new song is directed by Blake Shelton’s soon to be brother-in-law, Todd. Fans may remember that Todd directs the video for “Happy Anywhere.”

Fittingly, it seems that the single to be an ode to Blake Shelton’s fiancée, Gwen Stefani. The Voice coaches had a monumental year in their personal lives. Not only did the star couple get engaged, but they moved into a California mansion together.  The lyric that leads people to believe that the song is about Gwen Stefani is as follows: “Girl, your love can make a man feel rich on minimum wage.”

“Minimum Wage” receives near-immediate backlash.

While it seems that the above-mentioned lyric may seem sweet and innocent enough, many are calling it out in poor taste. Rightfully so considering that due to the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 has proved as a year of “record unemployment and financial loss,” according to BuzzFeed.

Naturally, BuzzFeed points out that “obviously a multimillionaire singing to his fiancée- another millionaire- about her love making someone on minimum wage feel rich” does not sit well with others. Consequently, people that heard the song are quick to respond on social media. Some of the comments are below.

  • “Does anyone else find Blake Shelton’s “Minimum Wage” song to be incredibly tone deaf to our country’s current state?”
  • Another comment says the lyric “just cements the fact that rich people have absolutely no f–king clue”
  • This next comment appears to be a dig at Country music fans. “The irony of listing to a millionaire Blake Shelton singing about “love on minimum wage” at the end of 2020 might be lost on its target audience.”

One of the more heavy-hitting comments includes a screenshot of Blake Shelton’s net worth, an astounding $100 million for 2020. It’s uncertain if Blake Shelton will respond, but at the time of this writing, he hasn’t.
