Jason Aldean found himself in the middle of controversy thanks to his new song “Try That in a Small Town.” He is now calling out the critics of his song. This isn’t the first time Aldean has spoken out about the controversy, and it likely won’t be the last time he says something about it.
Here are Aldean’s latest comments on the controversial song and why he says it doesn’t mean what people think.
Jason Aldean dismisses critics of his new song
Jason Aldean released the music video for his song “Try That in a Small Town” and now faces controversy about the lyrics and the video itself. For the video, the biggest downfall was that it was shot in front of a courthouse where a lynching took place years ago. This brought new meaning to the footage of the protests across America that were featured in the music video.
However, the harshest critics were the people who discussed the lyrics. These include “Got a gun that my granddad gave me / They say one day they’re gonna round up / Well, that sh-t might fly in the city, good luck / Try that in a small town / See how far ya make it down the road.”
The problem here is that Jason Aldean survived a mass shooting in Las Vegas that left 60 people dead. Critics are calling out Aldean for suggesting gun violence in small-town America, but the singer said that was not his intent.
“I’ve seen a lot of stuff suggesting I’m this, suggesting I’m that,” Aldean said during a concert on Friday night (via US Weekly). “I feel, like, everybody’s entitled to their opinions. You can think something all you want to but doesn’t mean it’s true.” This follows past Aldean comments that the song was just about being a “Proud American.”

Other musicians taking sides in Jason Aldean controversy
Other musical artists have begun to weigh in on the controversy. “God Bless the USA” singer Lee Greenwood was quick to join the support of Aldean, saying “He is the biggest patriot, like a lot of us.” Greenwood also said that people are trying to take away Aldean’s “freedom of expression.”
Jason Isbell mocked Aldean. Instead of pointing out the song’s violent lyrics, he simply made fun of Aldean for not writing any of his songs. This is interesting since it means that Aldean didn’t even write the controversial lyrics. He just sang them.
Dare Aldean to write his next single himself. That’s what we try in my small town

However, it was Sheryl Crowe who had some very pointed comments toward Aldean for the lyrics. She wrote that she was from a small town and people in small towns are sick of violence. “There’s nothing small-town or American about promoting violence,” Crowe wrote. “You should know that better than anyone having survived a mass shooting. This is not American or small town-like. It’s just lame.”
