Garth Brooks says he didn’t feel like a songwriter until “Luke Combs sang the sh*t out of his hit song, ‘Beaches Of Cheyenne.’”
Although he has received all of the awards imaginable, last year during the NSAI Songwriter Awards, he was horned with one more special award – the Kris Kristofferson Lifetime Achievement Award.
Kris Kristofferson Award AKA “Mount Rushmore”
The Kris Kristofferson Award is only granted to those who have made significant contributions to the American songbook, while simultaneously impacting the careers of others.
Garth Brooks now has the honor of standing alongside other recipients of the award, such as – Willie Nelson, Bill Anderson and Loretta Lynn.
After The Show…
He made the comment after the award show that he never really considered himself a songwriter. It hit him once he watched Luke Combs perform one of his famous hit songs at the show.
“I never felt like a songwriter until tonight when Luke Combs sang the sh*t out of Beaches of Cheyenne! Thank you NSAI for yet another unforgettable moment in my life and career. Love, g.”
Backstory On The Hit Song
The original “The Beaches of Cheyenne” was released in 1995. The song was written by Garth Brooks, Dan Roberts and Bryan Kennedy. The song is the third single from his album, Fresh Horses.
Garth revealed on a TV special called The Garth Brooks Story, that the completed song was much more different than his original version.
He stated, “It was supposed to be real funny. Kind of like cowboys on the beach, kind of, swingin’ kind of thing. Then it went to a guy on the beach that would come home from a suit and tie job. He never had any cowboy talents, but he always wanted to be one. So he just comes home, slips off his shoes and goes out and walks on the beach and dreams of Wyoming and stuff…”
He admitted that they were just playing with the lyrics when the line “every night she walks the beaches of Cheyenne” appeared. He knew in that moment, the song wasn’t going to be funny anymore.
