Toby Keith is getting ready to start touring again. This is huge news since he disappeared from the public spotlight as he battled stomach cancer. However, while he has said he feels better, he has even bigger news to share.
Here is what Toby has recently said about his health and his cancer update after his two-year battle.
Toby Keith gives big update about cancer battle
Toby Keith has a few Las Vegas shows coming up and he said he is getting things ready to tour again. The update came via an appearance on the Katie & Company podcast on Audacy with Katie Neal. He limited what he had to say about the actual cancer itself. However, he had some encouraging words to say in the interview.
According to Toby, he is “doing really good” and is “turning a corner.” He also said it’s been a “tough two years, but I think I’m turning a corner.” When asked if he is excited to come out on the other side, Keith said, “I don’t know if you’re ever done with [cancer], but I’m trying to be.”
Toby also spoke about how scary it was when he was first diagnosed. This will be his second Christmas since he learned he had cancer. Toby talked about a guy he played gold with who went to the doctor and was told he had two weeks to live. One month later, Toby was diagnosed and remembered what happened to the other guy. Now, two years later, he said he is “blessed.”
Toby Keith happy to be back on country radio
Toby also said he was excited to be back on country music radio after years of his music being pushed off for the flavor of the day. For the last few years of his recording career before cancer, Toby’s music wasn’t getting played on the radio. They favored bro-country, and he openly showed disdain for modern-day country music.
However, since his cancer diagnosis, things have changed for Toby Keith. He performed at the People’s Choice Country Awards, where he played an older song called “Don’t Let the Old Man In.” While he wrote the song based on a conversation he had with Clint Eastwood, the song has a new meaning for him after his cancer battle.
He also performed back-to-back music sets at an Oklahoma bar to see if he could still do it, and he felt optimistic. His next step was setting up three shows in Las Vegas in December, which sold out fast. That looks to be leading to a new tour.
“We’ve built a new set, and we’re getting the trucks and buses fired up,” Toby said. “Our plan is to go forward, don’t let this stuff define our future — let’s go.”
