Kris Kristofferson recently took part in Willie Nelson’s huge celebration amid reports he was near death. What’s behind his miracle recovery?

Kris Kristofferson & Willie Nelson Are Longtime Friends

If anyone in country music personifies ‘outlaw country,’ it’s Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. Both men are legends for their music but also have long lists of acting credits to their names. Kristofferson is known to play the brooding anti-hero.

In the 1980s, they teamed up with Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash to record and perform as the supergroup The Highwaymen. In addition to releasing music, the group filmed a movie together, the 1986 film Stagecoach.

Waylon Jenning passed away in 2002, and Johnny Cash a year later. Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson are still alive and kicking, as they proved during the recent CBS special celebrating Nelson’s milestone birthday.

Kristofferson Makes Surprising Appearance At Birthday Celebration

At 90 years old, Willie Nelson is as young as ever. He continues to make new music, tour, and was the recent subject of a docuseries about his life.

His life and career were also celebrated during the 90th birthday celebration that aired on CBS last month. The footage was shot during a two-night event back in April.

Viewers were shocked when Kris Kristofferson took the stage to perform “Loving Her Was Easier” with Rosanne Cash, the daughter of Johnny Cash.

‘Miracle’ Recovery After Health Scare

Kris Kristofferson quietly retired in 2021 amid the coronavirus pandemic. At the time, fans were concerned that he was in ill health. Especially after reports surfaced that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and was nearing the end of his life.

He looked very much alive and in good health during the birthday celebration. What’s behind his miraculous recovery from near death?

It turns out he didn’t have Alzheimer’s at all. He had been misdiagnosed for years and undergoing the wrong treatment.

A dedicated doctor eventually discovered that what Kris Kristofferson was actually suffering from was Lyme disease. The doctor quickly changed treatments, and the singer was able to recover.

“It’s like Lazarus coming out of the grave and being born again,” a friend told Closer about the unexpected recovery.

While Kris Kristofferson is still retired, he makes appearances for events that really matter to him, like the 90th birthday of one of his closest friends. Perhaps Willie Nelson and friends will return the favor in a few years when Kris Kristofferson turns 90. He will be 88 in June.
