Jelly Roll goes back to his old jail cell for a visit. While there, he stated, “I wrote hundreds of songs right here.”

Metro-Davidson Country Detention Facility

On an appearance on CBS Sunday Mornings, on Sunday January 7, Jelly Roll revisited the Metro-Davidson Country Detention Facility in Nashville. Jelly was previously an inmate at the facility, and he took his fans inside a cell he stayed in while incarcerated there.

Jelly stated, “This is jail. It sucks. Every one I’ve ever been to,” as he led Kelefa Sanneh through the facility.

His First Jail Stay

The famous singer’s first jail stay took place when he was 14 years old, at a youth detention facility. For the next 10 years to follow, he was in and out of jails. Most of his charges were drug-related. At just 16 years old, he served an 18-month sentence for aggravated robbery. He and others “robbed a couple of guys for some weed.” They were armed during the robbery.

Jelly has been carrying around an inexpugnable felony for over two decades due to Tennessee having a zero-forgiveness policy for violent offenders.

“There was a time in my life when I truly thought this was it,” he continues, as he wipes away the tears from his eyes. “Coming here, after getting nominated for two Grammys, it hits different…Even when I left here, I didn’t have a plan.

“I knew that I loved music, and it was the only thing I had any skill set in, I thought,” he continued.

Jelly Roll Links Jail Time To Music Career

He has been open about how he linked his jail and prison time to his music career. Back in December of 2022, he played a sold-out show in his home town at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. He put the proceeds toward programs for local incarcerated youth. It included a new recording studio at the same juvenile detention center he once was in. He parlayed his success into providing opportunities for offenders who have served their time. He is only hiring felons to work at his food truck.

Jelly then sat on the corner of the bunk bed in the jail cell, put his hand on the metal seat attached to the wall and stated, “I wrote hundreds of songs right here.”

When Was He In Jail Last?

Jelly left prison for good at the age of 2024. In the last decade-and-a-half since the, he’s worked his way up in the music world not only as a country singer but, as a rapper also. Within the last few years, Jelly Roll has become one of country music’s most loved stars. He released his debut country album, Whitsitt Chapel, in 2023.
