While they are two of the biggest country music stars in the world, Jason Aldean and Morgan Wallen had to overcome scandals in the last year. Now, country music legend Trace Adkins is defending both men from their controversies.
Here is what Adkins had to say about the two country music stars.
Trace Adkins talks country music controversies
Trace Adkins is one of the most iconic country music stars and he has seen a lot of controversies over his time in the industry. In the last two years, he has watched two of the most successful artists find themselves in the middle of severe drama. However, Adkins has a lot to say about both Morgan Wallen and Jason Aldean.
Adkins appeared on comedian Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast earlier this week. In that appearance, Maher asked Adkins about both Wallen and Aldean. The accusations against both men involved racist claims by fans. However, Adkins has defended both men and said they he does not believe that either is racist.
“The grievance junkies turn on somebody and they try to cancel them, and all it’s gonna do, he’s gonna sell more records than he ever has,” Adkins said. “It’s just gonna make him bigger than he’s ever been.” He also added that the ironic part is that neither man would have known it was going to happen because it wasn’t deliberate.
Trace Adkins talks Jason Aldean controversy
Adkins said that Aldean likely had no part in choosing the shooting locations for his music video for “Try That in a Small Town.” He also added he is almost sure that the director chose the shooting location, and it had nothing to do with what fans claimed it did.
The music video was shot in front of the Tennessee Maury County Courthouse. Critics said the lyrics of the song glorify vigilante gun violence against minorities. More so, the courthouse was the location of a lynching in 1927. Aldean said he had no idea about the history of the location until people began talking about it after the video’s release. The singer said he would have chosen a different location if he had known.
Trace Adkins also believes Morgan Wallen is not racist
The Morgan Wallen controversy has mostly died down. In the year since the incident happened, Wallen has worked hard to improve his image with his charitable works and has moved past it. However, for a time, many fans tried to cancel him for racist comments.
In 2021, Wallen was videotaped while drunk making a racial slur as he said goodbye to some friends. The footage was from a door cam and someone released it to TMZ. Wallen was moved out of radio airplay for a time, but as mentioned, that is no longer the case.
Trace Adkins said the controversy after he made the racial slur likely made Morgan Wallen more alluring to some of his fans. “He sold out two nights in a row, 55,000+ tickets each night. You know? God, cancel me,” Adkins said. “I’ve been around both of those guys. They’re good guys, you know? They’re not racist,” he finished.
