New Song Inspired By Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting

Jelly Roll was the subject of a huge profile by The New York Times that was published over the weekend. He spoke about all facets of his life and career, including his past and present. The singer shared his thoughts on politics, though he didn’t give any indication of who he supports. As a convicted felon, he no longer has the right to vote, which is something he hopes to help change in the future.

He was asked about his upcoming album. Beautifully Broken comes out later this fall and reportedly includes songs about addiction and imprisonment. Jelly Roll found the inspiration for one song in an unlikely place.

“Winning Streak” is a song from the forthcoming album. He wrote the song after attending an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.

“One of the old men sitting in there was like: “Look, man. It’s all good. Nobody came in here on a winning streak.” There it was. That was the beginning of “Winning Streak.”

Jelly Roll has been open about his past as an addict, but admits to the interviewer to drinking cocktails occasionally. He also spoke openly about his somewhat controversial stance of smoking marijuana regularly to help with his anxiety.

He confessed that attending AA meetings helps him stay away from the harder drugs that fueled his addiction.

“It was really hard for me to get away from those drugs. Something I do to maintenance my relationship with those drugs is I still attend the meetings but I never share. I just quietly sit and appreciate the message and the meaning.”

Plans To Step Back From Music Soon?

Elsewhere in the interview, Jelly Roll was asked about his plans for the next five years. His fans might be devastated by his answer. He said that he hopes he’s not “doing as much music.”

Instead, he wants to focus on giving back and serving the community. But fans still have his upcoming album to look forward to. He’s also headlining a tour that kicks off later this year.

Perhaps the singer just wants to slow down a little, not leave the music industry entirely. After all, he’s had a crazy, whirlwind rise to fame in the last few years.
