Darius Rucker has shared that he is more than ready to retire, but is it because he has been overloaded with work? The 60-year-old has been a touring and radio staple for decades now. So, it does make sense that he would want to enjoy his life away from the spotlight. Keep reading for more on what he had to say and what his plans are.
Darius Rucker Is Headed To Retirement
It feels like Darius Rucker has lived so many different lifetimes. Some fans know him from Hootie & the Blowfish. Moreover, they think that he is Hootie, and that is quite alright. Others just know him as a solo country artist, which is also accurate and great. Both can be true, but as a performer, Darius has worked his tail off. He has won three Grammys and, in 2025, did 110 shows, which is beyond incredible. Now, he is ready for retirement as he looks ahead to what is next.

In 2027, Darius will turn 61, and for him, that is a big deal. He knows that he has one more big push in him, maybe two more years, and then he would like to bow out:
(I’m retiring) in two years. I might. I’ve been really looking at it. I played 110 shows last year… what am I doing? I still like making records and playing and everything, but I’m really starting to be at home a lot. I like being at home a lot. So I’m looking at maybe doing a tour. One more big ‘Hootie’ thing (and calling it).
Obviously, that is great news for Hootie fans and those who love nostalgia. However, will country fans get a taste of what they want from Darius Rucker? Obviously, this is two years from now and a very full-circle moment. A lot of planning would also go into it, as well, but fans are not ready to see him end his career.

Stay Longer, Do Less
Fans have a suggestion for Darius Rucker, and that is to stay longer but do less. So, he can stick around for several years while performing fewer shows. That likely won’t happen, but it must make him feel good knowing how beloved he is:
- You can play less shows and not retire. Just play Musikfest every year. I’ve saw you there in 2021
- Hate to tell you but you might have to do a week of shows to accommodate everyone that will want that ticket. Lol
- PLEASE DON’T RETIRE!!
Some do not believe that Darius Rucker will ever fully exit the stage, and maybe he won’t. For now, he seems to have a plan in place. It will be interesting to see if he sticks to his two years or goes longer.
